The Association Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt e.V.

The Schwabing Christmas Market at Münchner Freiheit has been combining art, crafts, and a festive atmosphere since 1976. Originating from the Schwabing art scene of the 1970s, the market continues to stand for handcrafted, unique items offered exclusively by select artists. A jury ensures the high quality and diversity of the works. The market also offers culinary specialties, live music, and a cultural program. With its creative and personal flair, the Schwabing Christmas Market is considered one of Munich’s most artistic Christmas markets.

""

It was the artists of Leopoldstrasse in Schwabing who, in 1976, sought exhibition and sales opportunities during Advent.

With the support of the district council and under the patronage of Edith von Welser-Ude, they launched the Schwabing Christmas Market. The beginnings were quite adventurous. The works were displayed on trestle tables and under parasols in the snow.

To ensure the market’s long-term survival, the artists founded the association *Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt e.V.* Every member plays an active role in shaping the market. The work is continuous—once one market ends, preparations for the next begin—as the decorations and art installations change annually, and the music and children’s programs, as well as roving performers and advertising, must all be organized and booked. A jury drawn from the artists themselves selects new applicants each year to maintain the event’s artistic standards.
