The Schwabing Christmas Market

Already in the early 1970’s a number of artists, who were to be found during the summer on the ‘Art Mile’ in the Leopold Street, began to show their work at the former Swiss House in the run up to Christmas.

In 1975 the idea of an artists market, with proper stalls and events, was born. With the backing of the local council headed by Mrs. v. Welser-Ude, the Schwabing Chistmas Market was founded.

From the very beginning, the market was designed – and seen upon by the local council - as an artist’s market. Over one hundred international exhibitors, their artistic quality and craftsmanship in their work, the cultural programme, and the ever changing decorations sum up to the market’s destinctive flair.

A jury ensures that all the work shown comes from the studios and workshops of the artists and is also responsible for finding new exhibitors.
